Nalaga call for changes

Written By : MACIU MALO. A member of the 1987 Rugby World Cup team has called for a change in the Fiji Rugby Union hierarchy.
Former speed merchant Kavekini Nalaga who was instrumental in Fiji’s 1987 RWC quarter- final finish said it’s time for some FRU board members to step down.
Nalaga said some FRU board members don’t deserve to be in the board and they are taking up the positions at the expenses of some former national reps that have shed blood, sweat and tears playing for Fiji in their heydays.
The former Nadroga flyer said FRU needs new ideas for the betterment of the sport and the only was to include some former reps to share their experience and knowledge in the game.
The FRU board has the services of Keni Dakuidreketi (chairman), Mosese Nailumu (deputy chairman), Rafaele Kasibulu (Games Committee Chairman), Viliame Varasikete (Director Sponsorship), Graeme Leung (Director Legal), Iowane Naiveli (Director Finance), Poasa Ravea(board member), Tevita Koroi (Board member) and Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua (Chief Executive Officer).
“I don’t know how many FRU board members have already represented Fiji in rugby.”
“I have nothing personal against the board but we need people who have already shed blood and tears playing for Fiji to serve.”
“Fiji rugby needs the input of former reps especially in their decision making because they understand better the significant of playing for Fiji.”
“If you sick you will need a doctor to cure your sickness and not a teacher, it’s the same philosophy here, we need people with vast rugby experience to look after the welfare of rugby players.”
The Nadroga native said one of the major drawbacks of Fiji rugby today was the mixed up of roles within the FRU administration.
Nalaga singled out the 7s selection criteria as a classic example of poor administration system.
He said FRU should utilize the experience of some former national 7s reps to help Waisale Serevi selects his team. “Look at how the 7s team is selected. The people that selects the 7s team are the very people in charge of the 15s team.”
“We need a separate set of selectors to be in charge of the separate codes.”
“I think it’s in the best interest of Fiji rugby as a whole to bring in former 7s players to help Serevi in selecting his players.”
“We have many former 7s reps that are willing to offer their services and knowledge in 7s like Alifereti Dere, Mesake Rasari, Sakeasi Vonolagi, Viliame Satala to name a few,” Nalaga said.”
The Nasama native said Flying Fijian head coach Ilivasi Tabua should leave the 7s selection to Serevi and for him to concentrate on building a concrete foundation for the 2011 RWC.
“Fiji is pooled with world champion South Africa, Wales and maybe Samoa in the next world cup and that is something Tabua must focus on.”
“For Fiji to beat SA and Wales the hard work should start now and Tabua should concentrate on 15s and leave 7s to the best 7s player in the world in Serevi,” he added.
