image Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. The year of 2008 had been a year to remember for the achievement in the nation’s sporting activities.
Rugby League especially had its great share of triumphs and memorable moments.
In the world of Rugby League, Fiji Bati reached the semi-finals of the Rugby League World Cup.
Another great sporting event that is worthy of note was that the Fiji Police Team won the Rugby League Police World Cup. It was a great achievement for our police rugby team and for our people.
Secondary Schools did quite well during the year in their own sports and athletic events. Suva Grammar Secondary School won at this year’s Coca Cola Games in both the young men and women’s competitions.
In the Rugby Colonial Cup, the Crusaders defeated the Knights. At the Farebrother tournament, Northland Rugby team ended Tailevu’s winning run and a week later, Nitasiri won over Northland.
Nadi took the coveted Silverware a week later to add onto the Digicel Cup which they had won earlier by defeating Nadroga in the finals. But the big story in 2008’s rugby world had to be the return of Waisale Serevi to coach the Fiji Sevens team.
The country’s soccer tournaments were something to behold during 2008. The Fiji Fact Tournament saw the boys from Navua conqueror and win against their opponents. It was a proud day for the red devils.
In the Battle of the Giants, Ba took the top spot and the IDC tournament belonged to the team from Lautoka. The nation’s world of Soccer was an absolute wonder for the country during the year. Another story has had to be the level of criticism that Fiji’s soccer had upon its officials and coaches during 2008. Netball also had its fair share of eventfulness. For example, player Melissa Walker signed contract with Netball Fiji.
The sport of Golf saw Fiji’s Vijay Singh win two major world golf titles.
There have been many triumphs and many trials of Fiji’s sports both on many levels. However, we as a country had created a world of sports that have made our people proud and turned us into a strong sporting nation.
