Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. The public is being urged to be cautious during the rainy season because there could be a outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases.
Acting director of Health Services West Isimeli Tukana, who is filling in for Dr. Tharid Ali, said people should destroy mosquito breeding places.
“During this rainy season people should constantly be vigilant and destroy mosquito breeding places,” he said.
“There is a link with the weather pattern and mosquito borne diseases.”
He said an influenza outbreak was also likely.
“Flu like illnesses can also happen with the constant changing weather patterns and this high humidity and rain,” said Mr Tukana.
He has urged the public to be mindful of water intake.
“People should also take heed of their water intake, they should drink plenty of water and eat soup and see that they don’t get dehydrated,” he said.
Filariasis tablet are still available and the public is being advised to get them.
“We are still distributing Filariasis tablets and people should go to their nearest health centres to get them and we might also go in to communities to distribute the tablets,” said Mr Tukana.
