Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. A lot has happened in the world of international news and events. Actions have been set into motion during our year of 2008 that will forever affect the future in ways that we can only imagine.
Perhaps the biggest event was the recent election by the American public for Senator Barack Obama to become the first African American leader of their country and the 44th President of the United States. It was a close campaign run between democratic politicians Obama and Hilary Clinton. After Obama was given the nomination by the Democratic Party, the race came against Republican nominee John McCain. But in the end, Barack Obama won the Presidential election and will be sworn into office later this year.
Last year’s events also included the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Beginning with a visually stunning opening ceremony, the games initiated and resulted in China, Australia and the United States winning the most medals.
On May 3rd, over 133,000 in Burma/Myanmar were killed by Cyclone Nargis, the deadliest natural disaster since the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004.
The year also saw the coronation of the new sovereign in the kingdom of Tonga. King George Tupou V was crowned as the new monarch by Archbishop Jabez Bryce in Nuku’alofa on the 1st of August last year.
On August 3rd, a stampede at a Hindu temple at Naina Devi in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, India killed 162 people and injured 400 others.
On October 3rd, the Global financial crisis caused U.S. President, George W. Bush to sign the revised Emergency Economic Stabilisation Act into law, creating a 700 billion dollar Treasury fund to purchase failing bank assets.
Last year marked tragic losses for the American entertainment industry as a number of well-known actors and actresses died. Such deaths included film award winning legends like Charlton Heston, Heath Ledger and Isaac Hayes.
2008 was also a year in which a new Prime Minister was elected for the Land of the Long White Cloud. The month of November saw John Keys of New Zealand’s National Party win the election to replace Helen Clark as their country’s newest leader.
The year also marked the first twelve months of Kevin Rudd’s leadership as the new Prime Minister of Australia. Rudd assumed office on December 2007 and now celebrates his the first year in his term as the country’s P.M.
The world has been affected in a major way by these events and more which took place from the areas of politics to entertainment to business. Whether such changes and events were positive or negative, we can look back on the year 2008 and imagine how greatly it will influence the future.
