Written By : LUSIA VURUNA. Police raided two homes and confiscated dried leaves believed to be marijuana.
If it is confirmed to be marijuana the street value could be $150,000. The leaves were destined for Vanua Levu and would have been transported via courier.
Spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said police first raided a Davuilevu Housing home after receiving an anonymous tip from the public. This later led to the second raid at Khalsa Road in Nasinu.
“At around 11am on Tuesday morning, police officers from Nakasi Police Station raided a home at Davuilevu Housing. They found 44 aluminum foil wrapped parcels and black plastic bags of dried leaves believed to be marijuana,” he said.
He said these were hidden in the boot of a seven-seater vehicle belonging to the suspect.
Mr Sokomuri said when police conducted the raid, the home owner’s brother’s vehicle was also at the premises.
Police searched it and found packets of alleged marijuana leaves with an estimated value of $500. He said this led to the second raid at Khalsa Road in Nasinu.
“When we found the drugs in the brother’s vehicle, police officers decided to carry out a second raid at his residence in Khalsa Road,” he said.
“From there, we managed to confiscate 25 parcels with an estimated street value of $70,000.”
Mr Sokomuri also said from this raid, they had identified how drugs were entering Vanua Levu.
“After we intercepted the truck in Seaqaqa earlier this year, we though we had managed to successfully stop drugs from entering Vanua Levu. But now we find out that dealers have found other means of transporting these drugs,” he said.
The two suspects who were detained by police but released after their statements were taken.
“We have released the suspects after interviewing them. Charges will be laid as soon as we have received test results from Koronivia research station.”
