image Written By : KAILASH RAO. A group of 100 taxi drivers have raised their concern over the increase in base fees by the town council.
Northern Taxi Drivers Association secretary Imtiyaz Munif said they were angry because the changes were made by the Labasa Town Council without the taxi drivers and the union consulted.
He said the sudden rise had shocked taxi operators who had been paying $5.50 and now have to pay $100 for base renewal.
He said the Association members were annoyed with the move by the Town Council.
“Every three years the council has to renew the base letter which says the taxi proprietors are allowed to run their business from the market area,’’ he said.
“There are some other fees included like $22.50 for business and $6.88 for base fee on a monthly basis.”
He said the council had informed some of the taxi owners but there was no formal advice.
“Council’s rates are so high and when we demand better facilities and fixing the potholes at the taxi stand and to stop outside taxis from operating there, we are told that it is a private road,” said Mr Munif.
“We want the council to consider the situation and apply new fees after properly notifying the taxi proprietors.”
Mayor of Labasa Town Council Shivlal Nagindass said it was time for the council to demand the right rates from the business community.
He said the fees applied were less when compared to other town councils.
“W are charging $100 for existing taxis proprietors and for the new applications it is $500,’’ he said.
“Every business makes a profit and if the council is fixed on the same rates for years then who will consider our demands?”
