Tuiloma to work at Foreign Affairs

December 31
12:00 2008

Written By : SERA JANINE. Expelled acting Fiji High Commissioner to New Zealand Cama Tuiloma is expected to take up a post at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs next week.
Mr Tuiloma is on sick leave and wasn’t available for an interview yesterday.
However, his wife, Sereima Tuiloma confirmed that he would be returning to work at the Foreign Affairs ministry sometime next week. At the moment, the family is just concentrating on getting Mr Tuiloma to the best of health. It has been hinted that the former Local Government Permanent Secretary would get his old job back, but Mrs Tuiloma said he has only been asked to come into work next week with no specifics provided yet.
Mr Tuiloma was declared persona non grata by the New Zealand government in retaliation to the interim Government’s pronouncement of the same status for the acting NZ High Commissioner to Fiji Caroline McDonald.
Ms McDonald was declared persona non grata on December 23 by the regime and was given a week to leave the country, or she would be expelled.
Ms McDonald left the country on Sunday while Mr Tuiloma was put on the first flight out of Auckland after being declared persona non grata on the same day.
The standoff began after the New Zealand government refused to issue renewed student visas to the children of senior Government officials that have worked with the regime.
The son of the official secretary to the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, Rupeni Nacewa was one of those who studied in New Zealand and fell victim to the sanctions.
The other was the daughter of outgoing Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor Lepani Waqatakirewa. He has since resigned from his post.
