Rokodiva, the next Tabulutu

Written By : MACIU MALO. National Digicel 7s halfback Peni Rokodiva’s wonderful performances for Fiji yesterday could pencil his name as one of the future contenders for the halfback position.
The former national Under 20 scrumhalf to the 2008 World Youth Championship is the only specialist half back in the team and despite his small built Rokodiva is slowly making a name to himself.
Rokodiva’s game for Fiji has brought memories of one of Fiji’s standout halfbacks in Pauliasi Tabulutu.
With a bright rugby future ahead of him and with the proper training and exposures the Urata native from Vanua Levu could become the next Tabulutu
Tabulutu was a member of the late Ratu Kitione Tuibua’s formidable Fiji 7s team that shocked the world in 1990 and 1991 Hong Kong 7s with sublime rugby scooping the Hong Kong title for three years in a row.
Malo said if Rokodiva would be given more game time and exposures he could be the next Tabulutu in 7s.
“He has the skills, the vision and the speed that is required from any halfback and would be Fiji’s lethal weapon in the future in given more exposures.”
“If given proper training he could become the next Tabulutu.”
In their first pool game against the USA, Rokodiva scored two tries and also scored two tries in the game against the Cook Islands.
Malo said that the former Lelean Memorial School student would be an ideal candidate for the halfback position given more game time and exposures.
He said Rokodiva played a grand game yesterday and with the absence of Emosi Vucago and Lepani Nabuliwaqa, Fiji would rely heavily on this stocky playmaker to create some miracles.
“Peni (Rokodiva) has been playing well in our first two games scoring some wonderful tries and he will be deadly if given more exposures.”
“He has been told that there’s no other specialist halfback in the team like him and the onus is for him to deliver.”
“And we’re really glad that he played well despite his small built,” Malo added.
