Written By : MACIU MALO. Despite not taking part at this years’ Rugby Sevens World Cup, two of Fiji 7s unsung heroes stands tall amongst the all time best 7s players from around the globe.
7s legend Waisale Serevi and speed merchant Marika Vunibaka had left behind some unforgettable memories in the abbreviated code and have both engraved their names in the 7s history book as the all time top points and try scorers at the Rugby Sevens World Cup- an achievements worth commending.
Serevi has scored a total of 297 points followed by Vunibaka with 115 while Vunibaka tops the try scorers list with a massive of 23 tries followed by Serevi with 19 tries.
The maestro has played in all 7s world cup (1993, 1997, 2001, 2005) while his fellow Gau native Vunibaka played in three 7s world cup (1997, 2001, 2005). Both players were part of the 1997 and 2005 winning Fiji team.
Their achievements in the rugby battlefield are unmatched and rugby writers have run out of words in describing these two gifted Fijian rugby heroes.
While many have counted these two heroes out one thing is for sure that their achievements in the rugby paddock speaks for itself, an accomplishment even words couldn’t describe.
Below is an extract from the sportcentric website on the 7s legend.
“Waisale Serevi, playing at fly-half, a position described as the brain of the backs and the whole team, he marked the Fijian game for the last decade and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come.
On, an authoritative site on the new formula ( Fewer rucks, fewer mauls, more rugby!), he s included in the Magnificent 7 , the best of the best, with a laudation: There are not enough adjectives to describe Waisale, but magical is as good a starting point as any.
Has made 7s rugby his domain and he rules over it with panache and pride. His trickery with hand and foot, his unsurpassed reading of the game, his ability to manufacture space where seemingly none exists, his belief in God, himself and his country are why he was crowned king.”
