Derenalagi leads Nadi rugby

Written By : CHRISTOPHER CHAND. Apisai Derenalagi has been appointed the new Nadi Rugby Union president during the special general meeting at NASA in Nadi yesterday.
Derenalagi will lead the union after a split occurred within the Provincial champions earlier in the year.
The Nawaka native will head a new look administration team which have put to rest the dispute affecting Nadi.
Nemani Tueli has been elected chairman in a new portfolio for the Jetset side.
The vice-presidents are Taniela Uai and Luke Mataika.
Outspoken club delegate Penisoni Waki said they had decided to move forward and help Nadi rugby get back to its feet.
Waki said the appointment signified the voice of the clubs who were unhappy with the former executives.
He said this was a sign of better things to come this season.
“Derenalagi is no stranger to rugby, he was a Nawaka player during his time and he loves the sport. He has also served with Nadi before as manager and vice-president a few years back,” Waki said.
“We will now all move forward and support the new executives who were elected. We are hopping for ea good year.”
Sivaniolo Naulago was elected as the new secretary and his assistant is Noa Naivalu.
AFL’s Maika Bavoro heads the accounts and will look after the treasurer’s post with his assistant being Sanjay Ram.
Nadi will face Tailevu in the opening round of the Digicel Cup on Saturday at Ratu Cakobau Park.
The defending champions will hope to bounce back from the setback to retain both titles this year.
National sevens coach Iliesa Tanivula remains as Nadi’s head coach with his assistant Joeli Lotawa stepping up in his absence.
There was a split within the union this year which later forced the executives to step down.
Nadi faced a similar problems in 2006 but bounced back to win the Provincial competition.
