Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, eldest of four children; attended Free Wesleyan Primary and Tonga High; attended Epsom Girls Grammar, Auckland (1963), earned a BA Geography Auckland University, taught at Auckland Secondary Teachers College; also taught in Tonga (1969 – 72), met her husband Randy Thaman, went with him to USA (1972) and worked part-time and studied for Masters in International Education University of California and PhD Education (USP); joined USP in 1974.
Has conducted research, consultancies and published widely in the areas of teacher education, curriculum development and culture and education and has held senior administrative positions in the USP including Director of the Institute of Education and Pro Vice Chancellor and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor; Fellow of APEID (Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development).
Member of several international and professional organisations, including UNITWIN/UNESCO Asia Pacific Higher Education Network and the Joint ILO/UNESCO Committee of Experts on the Application of the Recommendation on the Status of Teachers (CEART), and the Asia Pacific Regional Scientific Committee on Research in Higher Education; is UNESCO Chairperson in Teacher Education and Culture.
