Written By : VASITI RITOVA. Was Fiji rugby’s first official inter-district trophy; presented to FRU in 1941 by two rugby-lovers, JJ Sullivan and AS Farebrother; originally known as Sullivan-Farebrother Trophy, 1950 media reports record name changed to Farebrother-Sullivan in 1950; competed for during a holiday weekend by Suva, Rewa, Vatukoula, Northern Districts (later split to form the Lautoka and Northern Unions) and Lomaiviti, but during the war years only three or four unions competed regularly; semi-finals played on Saturday and final Monday.
Long striding Fiji wing Jo Levula (Nadi) was one of first great finds of tournament involving Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy; when he played for Northern Zone against Suva at Buckhurst Park (12-5), with a record 3000 crowd; now a challenge trophy along New Zealand’s Ranfurly Shield competition format; Nadroga has won it more than any other team with Ovalau and Namosi among minnows to surprise big guns to take it home; is Fiji rugby’s premier silverware for provincial competition; now is ably sponsored by Colonial Group. -Source: Fiji Rugby Football Union)
