They had taken Nabua and Fiji rugby to greater heights, their memories and achievements would be hard to erase in the history of Fiji Rugby.
Nabua has groomed some of Fiji’s rugby gladiators who have gallantly shed blood for king and country all over the world.
They helped catapulted the sevens code to extraordinary heights.
They have set a benchmark that’s yet to be surpassed by any local 7s team.
Nabua’s dominance in the 7s game saw them scooping all the local 7s tournament in 1988/89 under the guidance of the late Nabua/Fiji great mentor Ratu Kitione Tuibua.
That Nabua team made up the core of the national 7s team for the 1988-1992 Hong Kong 7s tournament and became the first team in the world to win the famous Hong Kong 7s title for three years in a row from 1990-1992.
In that team saw the rise of Fiji 7s legend Waisale Serevi, brothers Pauliasi Tabulutu and Alifereti Dere, the Rauluni brothers (Meli, Vili and Vesi), Tomasi Cama, Eroni Vavaitamana, Filimoni Seru, and former rugby league rep cum coach Jo Rabele.
This former Nabua and Fiji star players not only succeeded during their playing days but have also coached the national team after hanging their rugby boots.
Of the lot Tabulutu, Cama and Serevi have coached the national 7s team, Vesi and Dere were former national 7s trainers while Jo Rabele became the Fiji Bati coach.
After proudly representing our country on international rugby scenes, their sons are now ready to carry on the rugby legacy that made Nabua a renowned and a champion rugby team.
Last week Nabua held an inter-street 7s competition in their bid to bring back those glory days to the community.
And amongst those emerging new breed are the Asaeli Tabulutu(son of Pauliasi Tabulutu), Peni and Maciu Rauluni(sons of Vesi Rauluni), Joseva Dere(son of former 7s skipper Alifereti Dere and Pate Dakuitoga (son of Jo Rabele).
Speaking to SUNsports over the weekend Nabua 7s team coach Elemaca Kobau Ravulo said the club is investing on these new breed rugby boys to bring back those rugby glory days.
Ravulo said the club is fortunate that the sons of former Nabua rugby stars are eager to carry on the legacy left behind by their fathers.
“We have Tabulutu Jnr, Vesi Jnr, Dere Jnr and Rabele Jnr training with the team and are all eager to continue from where their fathers have left off in the rugby field,” he said.
“I have been closely watching these boys at training and all they need is proper guidance.
“Rugby is already in their blood and all they need is the right upbringing.
“I’m glad they have been dedicated towards training and just give them more time they will be there amongst the best in 7s.”
Asaeli said his aim is to try and follow the footsteps on his dad.
Asaeli said there would be many challenges along the way but he’s hopeful of succeeding his aim in the near future.
“The challenge is on me to carry on the rugby left behind by my dad and I’m hopeful of achieving my aim.
“I just need to train hard and sacrifice for the good of rugby,” the Suva Under 23 rep said.
Asaeli, Peni, Maciu and Pate have all been selected for the Nabua 7s team to participate in some local 7 tournament.
Meanwhile these players’ dream was boosted with the timely assistance of NewWorld Supermarket.
On Saturday Newworld officials were at the Nabua ground watching with amazement the untapped talents at Nabua.
Ravulo said the supermarket has also agreed to keep on sponsoring the team in the near future.
“We are grateful that New World came at the right time especially when the club was in dire need of financial assistance,” said Ravulo.
“We are so thankful for their assistance and it’s good to know that we have started a new partnership of rugby development.”
Some of the Nabua rugby stars that have made name for themselves in rugby field included Serevi, Tabulutu, Dere, Vesi, Vili, Meli, Vavaitamana, Filimoni Seru, Mosese Vosanibole, Naca Saumi, Saiyasi Fuli, Natuna, Kata Ratumuri and Jo Rabele to name a few.
The following players are to report training at 5pm every afternoon at RSMS ground.
