The Ministry of Provincial Development, Multi Ethnic Affairs, National Disaster Management & Sugar coordinates and implements economic and social projects that are not captured by other line Ministries but has a direct impact on lives of the rural people. These include access roads, water supply, sanitation, foot crossing, housing, incoming generating projects and other community based projects. This year, Government through the Ministry had spent around $13.3 million for such projects. It also provides through the Department of Multi Ethnic Affairs provisions of scholarships with an allocation of $5.5 million to non indigenous disadvantaged people to ensure that such assistance are provided to all citizens of Fiji.
From January 2010 Divisional Commissioners will be taking a more active and proactive role in coordinating development in rural areas under the Integrated Rural Development Framework. This approach will ensure that rural development benefits are fairly distributed, opportunities are equally provided to people at all levels and quicken the delivery of service.

ii) National Disaster Management

Government is fully aware of Fiji’s vulnerability to natural hazards and is committed to promoting sound Disaster management and reducing disaster risks. It has continued to provide budgetary provisions since 2007 through an allocation of $4.9 million to the Disaster Rehabilitation Fund this year and will continue to do so in 2010 but with a slight reduction in allocation. In addition to this, Government has also provided budgetary provisions for the purchase of emergency communication equipment training. This has allowed NDMO to review the Natural Disaster Management Act and National Disaster Management Plan, development of disaster plans at all levels, development of IT system, installation of warning and monitoring systems and public awareness.
Government will continue to build up its resilience to disasters as expounded in the roadmap.
