New university opens today

Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. The New Year heralds in a new page in the Fiji education system.
It sees the opening of the country’s new tertiary institution- Fiji National University (FNU).
Thousands of students and over 1200 staff will enter their offices, laboratories, lecture theatres, workshops and classrooms of the FNU for the first time in 2010.
Today, the University will open its doors in locations around Fiji; Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba and Labasa.
The five colleges of the university and various campuses will provide access to affordable tertiary education throughout the country and the region.
The FNU College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry Head Office will be based at the Koronivia Campus in Nausori (Fiji College of Agriculture). The college will include the former Fiji Institute of Technology’s Fisheries Department and newly-developed FIT programs in Forestry.
The College of Engineering, Science and Technology Head Office will be at the FNU’s Samabula Campus, formerly, the Fiji Institute of Technology Samabula Campus. The College will focus on all areas of engineering, science and technology that are needed for Fiji’s development.
The College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences will be based at FNU Hoodless House Campus in Brown St, Suva and will include the former Fiji School of Medicine and the Fiji School of Nursing.
The College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies Head Office will initially remain at the Samabula Campus of the FNU, but would be relocated to the FNU’s main campus at Nasinu (formerly the Fiji College of Advanced Education). The College will include the former FIT Faculty of Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism Studies.
The College’s offerings will be at Samabula, Nasinu, Nadi, Lautoka, and Labasa.
The new Nadi Campus would be the focal point of the offerings in hospitality and tourism studies.
This campus is scheduled to commence operations from early 2010.
