Written By : LOSALINI RASOQOSOQO . Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says 2009 was a successful year for Government.
He said this was after the State introduced and implemented reforms that had brought about positive changes to the people of Fiji.
Mr Khaiyum said changes included the implementation of the new trading hours of all businesses in Fiji to 9pm daily, the introduction of special zones in Suva and Fiji which allowed all outlets in these zones to operate 24 hours and the regulation of longer liquor operating hours.
He said 2009 also saw the introduction of the Domestic Violence Decree, Sentencing and Penalties Decree, Criminal Procedure Decree and the Crimes Decree which all modernised the archaic Penal Code.
“Fiji also allowed for the establishment of the Independent Legal Services Commission, the successful restructure of the legal profession with stringent and modern rules for professional standards and discipline of legal practitioners is now provided for under the Legal Practitioners Decree. The amendment of the Marriage Act now means that
girls (and boys) can now marry at the age of 18 years without consent,” Mr Khaiyum said.
Previously, girls could marry at the age of 16 years with consent.
However, Mr Khaiyum said the changes would not have been made possible without the support of the people of Fiji.
He also wished everyone a fantastic 2010.
