Fanning, Kyrgios win
Written By : MACIU MALO. Nick Kyrgios and Emily Fanning were crowned the winners of the Air Pacific South Pacific Open Junior Championship in their respective categories yesterday.
The dou maintained their impressive forms from day one to end the tournament on a high note in Lautoka.
In the girl’s final, Fanning proved her dominance when she outclassed Anavea Pain 6-0, 6-1.
Kyrgios was stretched to the wire by Dekel Bar in the boy’s division final and later took controlled of the game convincingly winning by 6-3 and 6-1.
Oceania Tennis Federation executive and tournament referee Patrick O’Rourke said the winners lived up to expectation.
O’Rourke said the duo deserved the titles after fighting off some tough opponents during the six-day-event.
“It was a sweet victory for Nick and Fannings after six long days of tough competition,” he said.
“Fanning wins in a one-sided affair while Kyrgios was evenly matched in the first game before controlling the second game.”
O’Rourke said he was pleased with the standard witnessed during the tournament and was impressed with the playing facilities.
“The court was superb and in top class that was enjoyed by all the players.”
“The standard of the competition was high which I think will benefit the local players.”
Meanwhile, O’Rourke has confirmed that Fiji would be hosting the Regional Junior Championship in August.
“We will be coming back in August for the Regional Championship and we love the court and other facilities offered here at the Goodman Fielder Regional Tennis Centre.
“Definitely this will be another golden opportunity for the local players to be exposed against the best in the region,” he added.
