Written By : SHIRI LATA. The Fiji Bus Operators Association has condemned the Consumer Council’s comment on its bid to increase bus fares as flawed.
It claims the 2.5 percentage points increase in the VAT rate will affect everyone.
President Zane Dean said, “Bus operators as the Government’s agent collect and pay the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) the applicable VAT.
“We can only pay what we collect as VAT,” he said.
Consumer Council chief executive officer Premila Kumar said the Ministry of Transport’s announcement was very clear.
“There should be no increase, so if the Government is stepping in then the operators should abide by it,” she said.
Mr Dean said bus operators have already absorbed three cents per litre cost in fuel announced in the Budget and a fuel increase of four cents this week.
