The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for Qatar, Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al-Attiyah flew out of Fiji in his private jet happy on Friday, happy with the outcome of his visit. “He left on his private jet from Nausori on Friday about 2.15pm bound for Manila for a technical stopover then on to Doha,” Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said. On Friday morning at 9am Dr Al-Attiyah paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, and conveyed Qatar’s donation of US$100,000 to Prime Minister Flood Relief Appeal Fund. He was also briefed by the deputy secretary of the Strategic Framework for Change Co-ordinating Office (SFCCO) Edward Tunidau on Fiji’s Roadmap to Sustainable Democracy and Elections in 2014. “The Minister then went to prayers at the Toorak mosque at 1pm with AG Sayed- Khaiyum before leaving for Nausori Airport.” Dr. Al-Attiyah’s visit to Fiji was through the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Fiji and Qatar established diplomatic relations on October 20, 2010. Both Fiji and Qatar have contributed troops to UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon. Dr. Al-Attiyah was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in 2011. He was previously Qatar’s Minister of State for International Co-operation. Areas covered in his discussion during this short visit, Ratu Inoke said, focused on improving air routes, a direct air link to Fiji for Qatar Airways, hotel and resort real estate and a number of food security projects. The Government, according to Ratu Inoke, was thankful to the State of Qatar for the visit because it provided an opportunity for Fiji to explore avenues that would benefit both countries.
