Juniors first golf championship

December 31

The Fiji Golf Club will host its first ever Junior Golf Championship next week.
Club captain Kevin Maitava said this was the idea of John Cooper who was once a golfer in Fiji many years ago and had initiated this idea because he thought of contributing to the development of junior golf in the country.
He returned to New Zealand with his family and was part of this year’s Fiji Open which was hosted by the club in June.
“He donated a trophy together with $1000 for the organisation of the tournament,” Maitava said.
“The trophy will be named after him and the idea was to develop young, talented and upcoming golfers.
“We were supposed to have the tournament in December however Cyclone Evan had spoilt the party and this was why we had to move it to a later date.
Maitava said they were hoping to rake in 50 or more junior golfers and those from Nadi and Lautoka were also expected to be part of the event.
He added the tournament would now be an annual one held in December to coincide with the school holidays.
“While the event is aimed at developing junior golfers, it is also a good time for these young children to be involved in something more interesting such as playing golf,” Maitava said
