Nadroga rugby prop Peni Ravai jets out today to join the Digicel Fiji 7s team in Las Vegas.
Since the first round of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series started in Gold Coast  last year, Ravai is the 20th new player to take part in the series as round five kicks off in Las Vegas this weekend.
Ravai replaces injured Josua Tuisova, says national head coach Alifereti Dere.
“He will be accompanied by Max Hughes (trainer) who should arrive into the country today (yesterday) with Tuisova from Wellington,” Dere said.
Ravai, who will get a baptism of fire in Vegas for his first ever HSBC Sevens World Series, said he was told on Sunday that he would go.
It was something he did not expect because Tuisova was a backline player. But fortunately, for him both backline players that were in the non-travelling reserve list, Emosi Mulevoro and Sakiusa Gavidi, were injured in camp.
Ravai was called in to replace injured Lepani Botia in the Fiji Barbarians team at the Uprising Fiji International 7s tournament last month.
“We were still camping when the team left,”Ravai said.
“I just did my part at training, didn’t think much about going to replace anyone.
“And when Tuisova got injured, I thought one of the backline players would go.
“I think I just need to encourage the boys, I know they’ll question me on what it’s like back home after they lost at Wellington. But I want to do this for my late dad.”
The Natuva, Vugalei, Tailevu man said he told his family who was back in the village and they have asked him to do his part.
“They’ve encouraged me when I spoke to them and my mother has reminded me that I should remember what my late dad tells me and that was to do everything to the best of my ability,” Ravai said.
Playing 7s is not new for the mobile prop, as he plays 7s with the Davetalevu Rugby team that has been playing around the world competing in tournaments in Malaysia and Australia.
