The Digicel Fiji 7s team failed to continue the momentum from their pool games as they went into the quarter finals of the main cup competition on Sunday at the Glasgow 7s.
Their loss to England at sudden death by 15-12 saw the Fijian boys being relegated to the plate semi finals where they again faced their fate losing to the Eagles 7s side of United States of America.
Miscommunication and wrong options saw the English man take a penalty near the uprights to dissect Fiji’s chances of making the Cup final.
In the Plate semifinal, USA dished out Fiji’s second loss to them after they defeated them in the same category in Tokyo at the last leg. Fiji lost from the start with a 0-10 trailing behind USA at half time to a 7-22 deficit at full time. USA went on to win the plate final beating Argentina 17-7.
Speaking to IRB.com USA captain Matt Hawkins said they came in to play quality rugby and that was exactly what they did.
Their win against Fiji-once dubbed World’s best in the abbreviated code, has given the USA team more confidence that they can take on any team as they look to the World Cup in Moscow next month.
“We wanted to play quality rugby and we played good rugby and just get better.
“Winning the plate is close enough, The World Cup is what we’re coming for and we know we can take on anyone. The Fiji game showed what we can do and now we just gotta get better,” Hawkins said.

How they stand:
1 New Zealand        151
2 South Africa        122
3 Fiji            108
4 Samoa           99
5 Kenya              84
