Former national 7s rep Marika Vunibaka urged the Digicel Fiji 7s team to work on their defence as the team gears up for the much-anticipated 2013 Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow later this month.
“I think the only area the players will have to work on is their defence. This was a problem from the previous years, even in our days this was the only problem so the team will have to work on this area,” Vunibaka said.
The Vione, Gau, man is one of the few Fijian players who had featured in three Rugby World Cup meets.
His first was in 1997 where Fiji defeated South Africa in the Cup final 24-21 and his second was in 2001. His third and most memorable one was in 2005 where Fiji defeated New Zealand 29-17 in the Cup final.
The 38-year-old said Fiji’s last two world cup victories were history, now as all the teams would be vying for a win in Moscow and he as much as the Fiji fans want Fiji to bring home the silverware.
“I just hope that Fiji wins this last world cup and bring the Melrose Cup home to Fiji.
“I wish the team the very best in their preparations for Moscow,” Vunibaka said.
Even though he was not impressed with the selection Vunibaka believes the coaches have plans to get the players to focus on the job.
“I think that there are other players that should have made it in the squad but that’s done now; the squad has been selected and we just have to give our support to the players.
“Let’s forget about the selection now and let’s work towards winning,” he said.
He represented Fiji in rugby 7s from 1997–2008 and was the top try-scorer during the 1997 Rugby World Cup. He is currently a coach/player for the Lomaiviti Babas 7s side.
