SODELPA to name committee, then a leader
By ROSI DOVIVERATA
The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) will name their new party leader after their first official meeting this afternoon at the Khatriya Hall, Suva.
Secretary General Pio Tabaiwalu said they will be endorsing a committee who will select a new party leader.
The four member committee will be from the four divisions around Fiji.
“We will not be announcing our party leader tomorrow. The committee will consult widely and we will make an announcement on a later date,” he said.
The current interim leader is the Gone Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa.
Mr Tabaiwalu said they will not be making any hasty decisions on the appointment of their leader.
“It’s only fair because we don’t want to be imposing anything on our members.”
The four member committee is also expected to set out a criteria for those vying for the position.
There are two party vice presidents, Ratu Lote Yavuca and Silivenusi Waqausa.
Party Treasurer is Ruci Karuru while Mr Tabaiwalu is Secretary General.
Including the interim President, five officials were appointed as a requirement of the Political Parties Rgistration Decree.
On May 3, SODELPA was officially registered under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree.
Since then, SODELPA has been able to operate, function, represent and hold themselves out to be apolitical party.
Mr Tabaiwalu added that SODELPA’s branch set-up is going ahead as planned all around the country.
“We’ve had a lot of interest from the public and we are progressing well so far.”
