The Saunaka Rugby Club of Nadi will celebrate its Golden Jubilee next year.
And to kick off the preparation for their 50th year celebration, the club is organizing a fundraising drive on Boxing Day (December 26) at the village.
Club secretary Epeli Natavuke says they are planning a big party in 2014.
“The fundraising is to help us celebrate the occasion in a big way,”he said.
“We need to pay tribute to our former and current Saunaka reps.
“And we are also seeking support from the club members who are living in Australia and around the world.”
The club was established in 1964 and some players who later played for Fiji are Sela Toga, the late Ratu Josateki Sovau (Fiji’s first coach to 1987 Rugby World Cup where the team reach the quarterfinal), Ponipate Toga, Laisenia Kato, Ilaisa Saukuru, and Ponijese Lou Lutuciri.
Some players who played for Nadi includes Apakuki Tuitavua, Apisai Toga, Joeli Lotawa, Kelepi Ketedromo, Ilisoni Ratusai, Inia Naqia and Vatemo Ravouvou and current Digicel 7s reps Samu Saqiwa, Maika Ravouvou, Veniona Toga, and Maika Toga.
Vodafone Fiji Bati rep Apisai Koroisau is originally from Saunaka.
Saunaka RC reached the final of the 2013 Nadi Rugby club competition but was beaten by eventual winner Gaunavou at Prince Charles Park.
Natavuke said that Saunaka RC coach Ponijese Lutuciri aims to keep the momentum in 2014.
“Our aim was to do well in the club games next season.
“We have a Facebook page ‘Saunaka Rakavi’ where updates with regards to activities and achievements of its members are posted.”
The fundraising will be opened by the Saunaka ruggers living in Australia.
