Another loss to Fiji Rugby Union

By MAIKA BOLATIKI, Managing Editor/News

The Fiji Rugby Union has lost another of its favourite sons in Ratu Isikeli Tasere.
Ratu Isikeli was the chief of Nayawa Village in Nadroga holding the title of Tui Madudu.
He was also a former mayor of Sigatoka.
At the time of this death he was the president of the Fiji Rugby Union.
Nadroga Rugby Union president Tiko Matawalu said they were at a loss of having lost someone like Tasere, who had contributed a lot to the sport in the country.
“It’s so sad you know for Nadroga Rugby to end our 2013 in this manner. We lost our patron and Turaga ni Ka Levu earlier and now we have lost our former president. After all the success in the year 2013 for us to end our season with the sudden loss of our two very prominent figures in the vanua and the rugby administration; that is something we are mourning for and it is definitely a big loss to Nadroga rugby.”
The Tui Madudu died on Boxing Day at his Nepani, Nasinu, home.
Surely Ratu Isikeli’s death is a great loss to Nadroga and Fiji rugby too.
He was a pillar of Nadroga and Fiji rugby. The Tui Madudu was a very hardworking person during his days as a player for Nadroga and gave all his best for FRU too.
As a chief he served his people well.
He made his debut for Fiji on June 11, 1974 against the All Blacks in Suva. Fiji lost 13-14. He marked his final appearance with a 24-4 victory over Queensland Country on June 2, 1976. He played alongside former teammate, the late Rupeni Qaraniqio (flanker). He earned four caps featured in a total of 13 games, scored a try in his short career in the national jumper.
The late Ratu Tasere was also a former mayor of Sigatoka Town and former parliamentarian. He was awarded the Member of the Order of Fiji for his meritorious service, by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau in May 30 this year.
To honour his death the Sigatoka Town Council has decided not to have New Year celebrations out of respect for the mourning families of Ratu Isikeli and Na Ka Levu Ratu Sakiusa Makutu who also died recently.
We must congratulate the late Ratu Isikeli for his enormous contribution to Nadroga and also to Fiji as a whole.
This rugby quote by Mr Vince Lombardi fits the late rugby hero, chief and administrator well – “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”
For the family, we pray with you for the new journey the Tui Madudu had started.
