The special administrator for Nadi, Robin Ali, confirmed in a phone interview yesterday that Nadi Town will not have a street party.
After a dispute between the Town Council and the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry about hosting it on the main street, and with the decision pending, Mr Ali said organisers weren’t happy about the decision and cancelled.
“The organisers backed away from the re-location idea,” Mr Ali said.
“They wanted the party to be held on main street but that wasn’t possible. So this year, Nadi won’t be having a street party.
“We’ve tried to liaise with organisers to move the event to Market Road or to one of the two town parks, but they were not happy about this.
“The chamber was strongly against having the party on the main street and for this reason we have had to consider other options.
“The organisers for the event backed out because of this problem, since last year’s party on the main street had been a hit for all of the Nadi residents. This year is different unfortunately,” he said.
Apart from Nadi the cities of Lautoka and Suva will be have a street party to welcome the New Year, along with Ba and Labasa.
