Pita Gus Nacagilevu Sowakula will join siblings Milika and Mataika Koyamainavure at Iowa Central Community College next year.
Fiji Basketball development officer Laisiasa Puamau confirmed the news yesterday.
“Pita Gus has been scouted by Iowa Central Community College and will be joining the school next year,”Puamau said.
“It’s all thanks to the brilliant performance displayed last season by Mili and Mataika.”
The Tavuki, Kadavu native was surprised to hear the good news and knows he has to continue working hard.
“I’m very happy about this opportunity and my aim now is to go out there and lift my performance to another level,”he said.
“I will be learning a lot of new things and develop my skills.”
Puamau says this is a good opportunity for the former Central College Lautoka student to eye professional level and join Valerie Nainima who is currently playing in Germany and Letava Whippy who is in New York.
“He is natural built for the sport, this is a good opportunity for him,”Puamau said.
“He is a very good player, has the skills and should impress.
“We identified him as a scholarship contender in the last two years following his performance in the national and schools competitions.”
The 20-year old made his first international debut during the FIBA U19 competition in Australia in 2012 and was also selected to be part of the Oceania All Stars and the Oceania Open team in the same year.
Gus was also a member of the national team to the FIBA Oceania Championship in New Zealand last year where he was also awarded the best player of the tournament.
“We thank Lautoka Basketball for identifying and developing him and getting him to where he is today.”
