The DHL Raiwaqa Rugby Club created history yesterday by becoming the first winners of the Commodore Community Challenge Tanoa.
The Tanoa is the series prize being challenged by Raiwaqa, Lomaiviti and Nabua rugby clubs.
Raiwaqa scored four tries (1 converted) and a penalty to one from Lomaiviti to win 25 – 5.
Raiwaqa tries: Maciu Raida (2), Akuila Nauluvula, Maciu Raele. Pen – Rusiate Uluimoala. Conversion: Taniela Vueta.

Lomaiviti try: Toko Mata.
The Commodore Community Challenge Series is a initiative by the clubs to help them in their pre-season training in preparation to the Suva Rugby Union weekly competition and also to foster relationships between players in Raiwaqa, Raiwai, the home of the Lomaiviti Rugby Club and Raiwaqa. In the past, the three areas were synonymous with off and on the field feuds.
Series chairman and Raiwaqa head coach and former Raiwaqa/Suva skipper, Mataika Koyamainavure said the intiative had a lot of benefits.
“Firstly it keeps the players busy throughout the year instead of the distractions of life boys in these areas face daily,” the former robust looseman said.
“This series brings us together and keep the boys training and looking after themselves during the festive season. They have training programmes, the Government had helped equipped our clubhouses and it is noticed by the way our boys play.
“The Prime Minister donated the Tanoa to be used as the main prize. We are lucky that Naboutini Transport came with a $12,000 three-year sponsorship and we have people who are born and raised in these areas who are running the show. There is a lot of interest and it will grow next year with more plans to involve our families and friends,” he said.
Organising committee: Koyamainavure and Laisa Kaivei (Raiwaqa), Major Aseri Rokoura , Saiasi Fuli (Nabua), Viliame Gadolo and Sekaia Conikeli (Lomaiviti).
Winner Raiwaqa won the Commodore Community Challenge Tanoa and $1500 – Lomaiviti and Nabua also received cash prizes.
Nabua, meanwhile, beat Nasinu 27 – 3 before the final match.
Comments: Viliame Gadolo, Lomaiviti coach – “We played well and we have a lot of young and new players that we are introducing this season. The series is good because it will help improve rugby in Suva and Fiji.”
Koyamainavure- Raiwaqa – the standard of performance has changed. This is the result of the team gaining access to gym training three times a day. Some of our players are unemployed and rugby is a way of giving them a good future. They are fit and they are dedicated in their training.
