Village factions fight

August 14

The Fiji Police Force yesterday received the report of a fight at Ucunivanua Village in Verata, Tailevu, on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed this yesterday saying the fight was over the selection of the new village headman (turaga-ni-koro).

A group, he said, had brought in the new headman and this was disputed by the faction backing the current one.

Inspector Sokomuri said the current headman had filed a report and the new one had been charged with common assault. Yesterday the new one filed a report and they were closely looking at it. The Police had advised the villagers to remain calm.

Speaking from Vanuaso Village in Gau, Tailevu’s provincial administrator (PA) Semi Kuru said his office had received a name for the Ucuivanua headman and had okayed it.

However, he was not aware of what happened at Ucunivanua Village as he was on leave in his village in Gau.

He said that it was very unfortunate that the incident had happened.
