Contestants in community outreach

Contestants in the 2014 Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North yesterday brought a smile to 63-year-old widow, Tara Wati, of Dreketilailai in Bulileka outside Labasa.

The Empower Pacific volunteers and the king contestants were there to improve Ms Wati’s sanitation. This community outreach were part of Empower Pacific’s programme so they involved the king contestants to help them out.

Empower Pacific senior counsellor, Kelera Batibasaga, said it was good for the king contestants to be involved because it needed manpower.

“Tara Wati’s family do not have any form of income; she is a widow with a sickly daughter,” Ms Batibasaga said.

“They have no electricity and water and this is the type of family Empower Pacific looks to try and help out.

“So I invited the king contestants to be part of the initiative today (yesterday) to improve the family’s sanitation” she said.

“We’ve brought some clothes for the family and have also done the necessary paperwork and for the family to start receiving Social Welfare assistance by next month,” Ms Batibasaga said.

“Empower Pacific is honoured to have the king contestants here with us doing something for the community” she said.
