Cane Production Ratio Impresses FSC

Our sugar industry continues to strive to grow with efficient mill services and the quality of cane harvested for the 2014 season.

Fiji Sugar Corporation noted a significant improvement in the tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar (TCTS) ratio compared to the 2013 season.

On Wednesday, TCTS ratio stood at 8.6 which was confirmed by FSC executive chairman, Abdul Khan.

“The TCTS stood at 8.6 as of Wednesday which means 8.6 tonnes of sugarcane is required to make one tonne of sugar,’’ he said.

“We have made close to 86,000 tonnes of sugar.”

Mr Khan said this year, the TCTS ratio was far better than the TCTS ratio the past year which stood at 9.7.

“Looking at where we were last year, we would require 9.7 tonnes of sugarcane to make one tonne of sugar, so we are one tonne better,’’ he said.

And despite the downfalls such as shortage of cane cutters and the increase in cane fires, the industry is optimistic of a better harvest this season.
