Suva is changing and getting better day by day, creating more employment and economy for Fiji, says Suva City’s special administrator, Chandu Umaria. He revealed this during morning tea for Queens contestants in the 2014 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival at the Civic Centre yesterday.

“Suva is becoming a tourist destination and I want to thank Fiji Airways who are now increasing their flights from Nausori Airport to Australia, New Zealand and other countries,” Mr Umaria said.

He said this had brought more tourists to Suva and Fiji. “Last year we had 302 new businesses open in Suva and we have seen 243 businesses now operating in Suva.”

Up to now, Mr Umaria said, 20 cruise liners berthed in the port of Suva and by the end of this year there would be another 23 cruise liners berthing. “Last year we had the Seabreeze Walkway, My Suva Picnic Park and the Terry Walk refurbishment which are the icons of Suva.”

He said there were also some new developments such as the Damodar City Complex, Grand Pacific Hotel and Raiwaqa Market. “Next year we intend to have the Suva Bus Station and Suva Market redevelopment which is still in the consultancy stage.”

Mr Umaria said the cost would be determined once the concept was finalised in four to six weeks.

“Albert Park will cost $13million to $15million and we have our foreshore redevelopment master plan in the consultancy stage.”

He said another two new compactor trucks should deliver efficient services in the collection of garbage and they had a mobile library truck available to deliver services to schools.

“The council will strive to improve its services in order to deliver better service and efficient delivery to the ratepayers in Suva.”
