We want people to own homes and have that sense of dignity and self worth: A-G

We want affordable and decent housing for all by 2020 and we are encouraging individuals or couples who want to build or purchase their first home to apply for grants.

The Attorney-General and acting Minister for Housing, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said this at the launch of the Housing Expo at the 2014 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival at Albert Park in Suva on Tuesday.

“A grant of $10,000 will be provided for building a home, while a grant of $5000 would be made available to those who wish to buy a home,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said individuals or couples buying or building their first residential home, must be above the age of 18 and must meet a commercial bank’s loan criteria.

“The initiative is something that would encourage home ownership especially amongst young Fijians which will enhance their sense of belonging and they will have a place in society.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said they wanted to encourage people to build homes because when homes were built a much faster growth to the economy was made.

“We want people to own homes and have that sense of dignity and self worth.”

He said applications forms were now available at all commercial banks.
