New Owners, New Plans For Growing Sunflower Aviation

Tim and Susan Joyce, owners of Skydive Fiji, Heli-Tours Fiji and Adventure Sailing Fiji have recently purchased Sunflower Aviation Limited and the Pacific Flying School.

A decision, which Mr Joyce said was driven by their need to have a reliable maintenance facility and secure hangar and operating base for their aircraft.

They had been trying to secure a suitable site to lease at the Nadi International Airport for a number of years.

However, it became critical after one of their Skydive aircraft was destroyed by a tropical cyclone in December 2012.

“We have a lot of plans for both Sunflower Aviation and the Pacific Flying School,” Mr Joyce said.

“However, initially our objective is to build on the foundation laid by the Collingwood family and improve on the services already offered.”

Plans for school

Mr Joyce indicated they will be offering helicopter flying training as part of the Pacific Flying School.

“We invite expressions of interest from anyone interested in learning to fly helicopters in Fiji,” he said.

“We have also recently purchased a twin engine Beechcraft BE-76 Duchess aircraft for multi-engine and instrument flying training and charters.

“The Duchess was chosen because it has retractable wheels and is one of the most popular twin engine / instrument training aircraft used in the western world.

“We believe it is critical that students get the opportunity to develop correct habits from the start of their multi-engine, instrument flying training.

“This was not possible with the twin engine aircraft that was used by the school in the past as they only had fixed wheels and were also more expensive to operate.”

Although operations will continue under the company name Sunflower Aviation, My Joyce said they have not ruled out the possibility of introducing another trading name and re-branding the company.

About the new owners

Tim and Susan Joyce arrived in Fiji in 2003 aboard their sailing catamaran, Moale, with their two daughters, Lucy and Elly.

Tim had been the manager and Chief Pilot of a number of large aviation companies in Australia.

He had also worked as a helicopter pilot and instructor for many years in PNG, Burma, India, East Timor, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.

They set up Skydive Fiji in 2004 and Heli-Tours Fiji in 2009.

They see their recent acquisition as an avenue to use their broad expertise in general aviation to offer professional, high quality air charters and flying training and aircraft maintenance with a high level of safety and integrity.
