The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation are currently assisting 2000 children under its Care and Protection Programme.

Minister Dr Jiko Luveni said in cases of child neglect, where a family found it difficult to meet the basic needs of their children, the ministry provided assistance through its Care and Protection Programme.

“We are providing monthly allowances and likewise a monthly allowance of $100 per child is being provided to all the 130 children staying at the nine residential homes,” Dr Luveni said.

She said the homes under the supervision of the Department of Social Welfare were the Boys Centre, Dilkusha Home, St Christopher’s home, Mahaffy Girls, Treasure Home, Veilomani Boys Home, Lomani Au Children’s Home, St Meena’s Home and Homes of Hope.

“In cases where the ministry finds that the child’s wellbeing is at risk, then the last option is to take the child into State care.”

Dr Luveni said they were working with non-governmental organisations to ensure that all the children were given the care and support they needed for their holistic development.
