The Nadi Town Council is hoping to open the refurbished and extended market facility for business in the coming week.

Currently engineers are working on the new drainage system for the extended facility.

Nadi Town Council manager engineering Haroon Shameem Ali said engineers from the council were working on the new drainage system for the extended portion.

“We are laying new drainage system for the newly-constructed ablution block at the market which will include a hostel facility for women vendors,’’ Mr Ali said.

“This is to accommodate the extra waste drainage from the building so we do not face any drainage issues in the future.

Mr Ali said other stakeholders such as Telecom Fiji Limited are working on the telecommunication lines before the market opens for business next week.

The building, which includes a hostel facility, will accommodate 30 women vendors who will spend the night there before they prepare for market day the next morning.

A group of market vendors, who spoke to Sun News said they were happy with the new market facility.

They said previously market vendors used to sell their produce at the extension site without proper shelter and have thanked the council and the Bainimarama Government for the support.

Nadi special administrator Robin Ali said the new hostel facility would provide accommodation to women vendors especially those coming from Navosa and Bukuya to sell their produce.

“This facility will provide shelter and security for women vendors who usually sleep on footpaths and shop verandas with their produce,’’ he said.

The extension costs $804,000.
