The Fiji Fashion Week hosted their inaugural Resort Wear Show at the Sofitel Resort and Spa last Saturday night.

The show on the wear is believed to be a trial run for the organisation intending to display internationally.

Fiji Fashion Week 2014 Managing Director Ellen Whippy-Knight said they intended to make the event a global one.

“There is a show called Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swimwear held in Miami in July every year; it is the biggest global swimwear trade show ever,” Ms Whippy-Knight said.

“We intend to do the same for the Southern Hemisphere, the Asia Pacific Region which includes Fiji and our Pacific region.”

She said Fiji would be an ideal location for such events for a number of good reasons.

“We have the most exotic surf, sun and sand in the world; our hotels are well-equipped for such large events. Most importantly from tonight’s experience it is obvious that our designers are ready for international market,” Ms Whippy-Knight said.

Tourism Fiji events director Sally Cooper said the organisation was proud to support such special events.

She said the event would give great exposure especially to tourists who travel to Fiji.

“We have had over 650,000 international visitors to our country last year, how great will it be when more of these visitors get the opportunity to sample and purchase Fijian-designed clothing,” Ms Cooper said.

Designers that showcased their wear included Hupfeld Hoerder, RAKO, Carolyn Ah Koy, Zelda Thomas, Tracey Farrington, Jean Ragg, Robert Kennedy, AZA, Elaine Taylor, Ana Rabuka, Intimate Fiji, Moira Solvalu, Andrew Powell and Rachel Fairfax.

The event was sponsored by Fiji Airways, Tourism Fiji, Fashiontv, Sofitel Resort and Spa, Party and Event Hire, Moet and Chandon, Fiji TV, The Fiji Times, Legend FM, FM 96, Quality Print, Kriz Signs, Staging Connections, Pure Fiji, Coca-Cola and Foto Fusion.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Fashion Week will present another spectacular event – The Hot Summer Night Ball on October 11 at the Brittania Room at Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
