According to wife Anuradha Kumar, she called her husband before the accident occurred.

“I asked him of his whereabouts and he said that when he will come home then we will have dinner together,” said Ms Kumar.

“He said if he was late, I could go to my mother’s place. He never said anything like this before and I was waiting for him to come home so I could ask why.”

She was speechless after she heard news of his death.

According to Fiji Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro the incident occurred a little after 12am yesterday morning along the Sariyawa Road, Momi, Nadi.

“The victim was travelling with three other passengers when it is alleged he fell asleep thus resulting in the vehicle veering off the road,” Ms Naisoro said.

She said the vehicle tumbled twice before landing upside down.

“The other passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Nadi Hospital before being sent home,” she said.

For the grieving mother, Nirmala Devi, life will never be the same without Mr Kumar.

He was a private mechanic by profession and described by his family members as a workaholic.

“He worked every day in order to look after the needs of his family,” said the distraught mother.

“His dad and I always waited on him to come home after work but yesterday morning he did not show up. The family depended on him and even though he was the sixth child of eight siblings, we looked to him for advice.

“He was very caring and helpful and if anyone ever needed his help, he was there,” Ms Devi said.

“He always told whenever he left the house, we did not know this was the last time, we would see him,” she said.

“He looked after me and my husband really well, always asking us if we ate even if he came home late,” she said.

The road death toll currently stands at 36 compared to 25 for the same period last year.
