A family of Korovuto in Nadi was left homeless after a fire razed their three bedroom corrugated iron and timber house to the ground.

The incident happened on Tuesday at around 12.30pm on the outskirts of Nadi.

Devastated house owner Satendra Dass, 32 said his five years of hard work went up in flames within minutes.

Mr Dass was on his way to Nadi Town to buy a part for a water pump machine when his father-in-law conveyed the news to him.

“I rushed back home but it was too late as the house was engulfed in flames,’’ Mr Dass said.

“I stood helpless watching five years of my hard work turn into ashes; we could not save anything.”

He moved to Nadi in 2008 and started building his house on a land approved to him by his in-laws. Mr Dass estimated the cost of damages at $75,000. His family is staying at a relative’s place at moment.

“I thank the National Fire Authority fire fighters who arrived in time and stopped the fire from spreading.

“Although fire fighters could not save my house but worked tirelessly to stop the fire from spreading to my neighbour and my in-laws houses.”

Two fire trucks attended the emergency fire call.

The house was not occupied at the time of the incident.

Mr Dass is pleading for assistance from the public to help him rebuild his house.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said investigations are continuing to ascertain the cause of fire.
