Flying Fijians head coach John McKee is helping prepare the Vodafone Fiji 7s squad to the upcoming HSBC Sevens World Series.

Yesterday he was with national 7s coach Ben Ryan in training the squad at the Uprising Beach Resort at Pacific Harbour in Deuba.

“It is very pleasing to see such a number of players training very hard and seeing them improve on their fitness levels is a great thing and we focused on their skills,” he said.

“I think there is a lot of depth within the squad. Ben Ryan has some very good players and it is going to be a tough job picking the final squad. It is good because it shows that the boys are really good and there is a lot of competition within the squad.”

McKee said he concentrated on the technical sides like tackle technique, lineout, breakdowns, and rucks and mauls.

Ryan said it was an added bonus to the team and a great partnership between 15s and 7s rugby to have McKee on the field with him.

“I love this week and really enjoyed the players’ company on and off the field. It is great to have John McKee here which shows how closely we are working together between the 15s and the 7s,” Ryan said.

“It’s good to have the national coaches for the 7s and 15s to be on the same pitch coaching together, McKee is doing some tackle techniques, breakdown, some decisions for the ball carrier, little technical details that he is excellent at.

“He and I can work on some of the boys’ skills, their attack and footwork and defence, so we got loads to go through and it’s all hands on deck.” Yesterday was McKee’s last day of working with the 7s team as he will be away next week.
