The Ministry of Works, Transport and Public Utilities have clarified registration fees for vessels remain unchanged amidst rumours that they had recently increased.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Commander Francis Kean, announced that the fees have remained unchanged as per the deduction that was endorsed by Cabinet and publically announced in October 2013.

“We want to correct some misinformation to the general public and also reassure the citizens of this country, particularly the maritime transport stakeholders, that these fees have remained unchanged,” Mr Kean said.

“We have been encouraged by the support that has come from all stakeholders since the reduction in fees was announced in October last year and made public in all media outlets.”

The regulations encourage operators/ship owners who have vessels less than 100 gross tonnage, 10 tonnes and the coasting-trade licence for vessels less than 10 meters in length to be registered and surveyed.

This is prior to the commencement of the Maritime Transport Decree 2013 (MTD) and the Ship Registration Decree 2013 (SRD) on October 17.

“It has been promising to see the number of feedback and the number of boat owners who have come on board to register their vessels,” he said.
