Nadi robbery suspects Senitieli Boila, 36 and Eroni Baleinukulala, 37 were denied bail by the High Court of Lautoka yesterday.

The duo appeared before Justice Sudharshana De Silva charged with one count each of aggravated robbery.

They are alleged to have been part of the five men masked group in a daring daylight robbery of $50,000 at City Forex Foreign Exchange in Nadi on August 15.

Justice De Silva questioned Eroni of the injuries on his body to which he replied that he was assaulted by the Police.

Boila requested the High Court to seek legal aid, while Baleinukulala was represented by Jotishna Nair of PNN Lawyers in Nadi. The duo will re-appear on September 18 for mention and have been further remanded in custody.

Furthermore, Police apprehended three suspects on the same day and had also recovered the said amount, however one of the suspects died in custody.

The third suspect, Vilikesa Soko, 30, passed away at the Lautoka Hospital on August 20. Vilikesa’s father, Jeremaia Soko is alleging police brutality as the cause of death as stated in the post mortem report.

Police have confirmed that four officers have been suspended and an investigation was launched last week.

Police Commissioner Bernadus Groenewald has made it clear that under his leadership, the Fiji Police Force would not tolerate any misconduct by its officers, including the use of excessive force.
