Rusila Nagasau will lead the Telecom Fijiana 7s team for the third time as the final 12-member squad was announced yesterday.

The team departs next Monday  for their qualifying tournament into the 2014-2015 IRB Women Sevens World Series in Hong Kong.

Nagasau captained the Fijiana team in the last two legs which they featured in of the 2013-2014 IRB Women Sevens World Series in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Guangzhou, China.

And captaining the side is not an easy job, but the players are helping her out.

“Being a captain is not easy, but the girls are there to help me out and we are hoping to qualify as that’s our goal,” she said.

Nagasau is confident about their performance in the tournament, especially when they go up against teams like Argentina and Kenya, which they have not met before.

“We have met Japan in 2012 in India and we beat them in the semifinal,”she said.

“Argentina and Kenya are new teams, but we have been preparing for three weeks. I have confidence in the girls that will play well.”

Meanwhile, Telecom Fijiana 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula said he could rest easy now that the final 12 had been selected and announced.

“I’m resting easy now and I know this is the best 12 we have got. Experience and a lot of skills showed  in the last three weeks,” he said.

“It’s been intense. There were some gruelling sessions but they stood up to it and showed mental toughness which is good and now we are just looking forward to the game.”

The Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer Radrodro Tabualevu encouraged them and said Fiji’s road to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil would start with the women.

“We are gathered to celebrate your spirit, eagerness and willingness to step up and represent us,” Radrodro said.

“Next week you will be in Hong Kong participating to be one of the permanent members of the series which is going to be a stage for you to try and compete for Rio.

“I have said to our coaches, Tanivula, Ben Ryan and John McKee that Fiji is looking to them (Fijiana) to bring us gold and the joy that comes with it.

“It is special that we start with the women. It is our men who always bring us joy and glory, but now, and perhaps the biggest stage that there ever is, the Olympic  Games.

“We have a wonderful opportunity to showcase the ability and the spirit of our young women.” he said.

Fiji is pooled with Japan, Argentina and Kenya.
