Forty-five-year-old single mother, Sulueti Raqoli has acknowledged the Ministry of Women for helping her become financially independent.

She is known in Nakelo, Tailevu, for being the first single mother to build her own home.

She also runs her own bee-keeping, canteen and tailoring business.

Income from her business has helped send her three sons to school and also to meet her daily needs.

Mrs Raqoli says the ministry has helped her overcome the challenges of being a single mother.

“My husband left me when my youngest child was born.

“It was a painful experience, but I had never given up on life,” Mrs Raqoli said.

“In 2010, my life took a new direction when the Ministry of Women assisted me with a funding of $3000 along with skills training to start my bee-keeping business.”

She has five beehives through which she is able to earn $200 to $400 per harvest.

“Bee-keeping is a profitable business. I sell my honey to Hare Ram Traders and to villagers in Tailevu.

“This year in March alone, I earned over $900 from the sale of honey to a local company.

“I am also able to earn around $60 a week through my tailoring and canteen business and have also opened savings accounts for my children, “she said.

Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni says empowering single mothers to become self-sufficient and financially independent is one of the endeavours of her ministry.

“Often the role of women is restricted to is confined to doing household chores.

“It is time to walk away from such practices and realise the economic potentials of women as breadwinners as well,” Dr Luveni said.
