Fiji primary schools Under-12 football champions Navua are in line to retain their title this week.

They were the first team from their grade to book their spot in the 39th CJ Patel Fiji Primary Schools U14 Inter-District Championship (IDC) and U12 playoffs which is held at the ANZ Stadium.

Navua won both their games yesterday after beating Nadogo 1-0 and later put up a good fight against Lautoka 1-0 in the three-day tournament.

The other teams have one match each to play today before the semifinals fixtures are decided.

In other highlights yesterday; Rewa upset defending champions Labasa 2-1 in the U14 while hosts Suva got onto a strong start after winning both their games yesterday – thumping Savusavu 4-0 and later defeated Nasinu 1-0.

Newcomers Navosa beat Savusavu 2-1 and drew with Nalawa 0-0.

Competition for the U14 grade is wide open and teams will have to complete two pool matches today before the quarterfinal fixtures is decided.

Fiji Primary Schools Football Association secretary Narendra Rao said Day One was a success.

“Day One competition started off well. The level of competition displayed by these young players was superb and we were impressed with the results they have shown,” he said.

“Good competition was shown from new districts like Navosa and other districts like Nalawa and Nadogo which travelled a long way and put up a tough competition against big teams,” Rao said.

“This year’s competition is open, no big scoreline all teams have prepared well.”
