It was all smiles for canecutters from the Wainunu Methodist Church Circuit in Bua, after Labasa businessman Kiren Reddy presented them with a cheque for $19,784.10 at Wailevu on Wednesday.

The Wainunu villagers, who have been harvesting Mr Reddy’s cane during the past seven weeks, were delighted when the businessman hosted them to dinner at his residence.

Mr Reddy, who owns Kinis Allied Industries and six cane farms around the Wailevu area, said it was a pleasure working with the Wainunu villagers.

“I always say cutting cane is a cruel job but I am so thankful to these people who left behind their village, families and vanua to come and cut cane for a good cause,” Mr Reddy said

“Over the past seven weeks they’ve been with us we have built up very close friendship and they are like family now,” he said.

Farm manager and sardar Kapoor Naidu said they were so grateful the people from Bua were harvesting cane in Wailevu. Representative from the Wainunu circuit in Bua Joseva Rokotunidau said the church needed to raise $15,000 for the Methodist Church conference (Bose ko Viti) this year.

“When we were told to come to Labasa and cut sugarcane, members agreed because this was a good way to fundraise money for our church conference.”
