The city of Lautoka will soon have its tallest building after the completion of the new five -storey Lautoka High Court Complex.

The Bainimarama Government is investing $35million in this complex which will be a few metres away from the existing one.

The Chief Justice, Anthony Gates, during the ground- breaking ceremony yesterday, said this was a significant project for the Government, the Western Division and for the Judicial Department.

“The users of the existing High Court building at Lautoka have known for many years of its inadequacy for the amount of business undertaken at that premises,’’ Justice Gates said.

“The facilities provided, whilst meagre for the 1970s when built, are totally inadequate today.”

He believes that the justice system within the Western Division must be able to respond to society’s needs for it to develop economically, financially and in its institutions and services.

“There must be judges and magistrates, court staff, court facilities and modern equipment for dealing with litigants’ disputes.

“The facilities must provide both for mediation and for conventional courtroom trials. The essential jurisdictions of the Court of Appeal, High Court, Magistrates Court, and various Tribunals must be there.”

Justice Gates said the immediate need was for courts and facilities to provide four civil division judges, a master and two criminal division judges.

The five- storey building will have 18 courtrooms, a gymnasium, a media room, interview rooms and audio and video recording in all court rooms.

“I believe the judges, members of the bar, stakeholders and members of the public will find that this building will provide the modern facilities they require while pursuing their litigations and court processes.

“Whilst not exactly the Burj Khalifa of Lautoka, the building will be one of the taller buildings in Lautoka City. Indeed the tallest for a while.”

Features of the facility:

– Adequate provisions for filing, records and archives;

– Separated cells for men, women and juveniles;
