The Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) continued its Super Month inaugural training at the Tanoa Skylodge Hotel in Nadi.

Previously the annual training programmes had been held at different regional locations but this time participants all came to Fiji.

IRB training manager Jock Peggie said the courses were targeted at the ongoing training of the workforce of the member unions of FORU.

“This workshop is part of the FORU strategic plan to grow the workforce to develop the great game,” Peggie said.

“The aim of the ‘super month’ is to upskill new trainers and educators within FORU.”

He said the ‘Super Month’ would culminate with the inaugural meeting of the Oceania Elite Referee Committee to discuss pathways for Pacific Island match officials and to determine appointments for FORU tournaments in 2015.

“We have a lot of support from the New Zealand and Australia rugby unions and it is great to see their input to grow the game since some unions are more advanced than others and we are keen to work with others for that sustainability,” Peggie said.

The event has drawn participants from Fiji, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu.

The extensive programme comprises: IRB Trainer course (to accredit people to license IRB Educators), IRB Educator course (to accredit people to run IRB courses), Strength & Conditioning Level 2 course, Oceania Sport Education Programme MiSO (sports management) course, Match Official Level three course, and Coaching of match official Level two courses.

The courses is co-ordinated by Oceania Regional training co-ordinator Talemo Waqa, quality assured by Peggie, and who is assisted by IRB trainers from Fiji, UK, PNG, Germany, New Zealand and Australia. The training ends on September 28.
