A widow in Labasa is homeless today after her three-bedroom home and her belongings were destroyed in a fire on Saturday afternoon at Batinikama.

Amra Wati had to be pulled out of her burning home by her neighbour and Police officer Nitesh Nand while she was trying to save some of her belongings.

“I was alone at home while the rest of the family members went to Linepoint to visit family members,” Ms Wati said.

“I heard something in the other room and thought my son, Mahendra was back, so I kept lying down. Then I saw smoke and knew that my house was burning so I tried to save some of my belongings, but the fire destroyed everything.”

Mr Nand ran into the burning house and pulled Ms Wati out because the fire was intense.

“Amra sustained some injuries while trying to save some stuff. The fire was really fast, so Amra could not save anything from her home.”

Meanwhile, National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’Connor acknowledged that they received the call from Police.

“All our firetrucks responded to the fire at Batinikama and our firefighters did their best to contain the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses” Mr O’Connor said.
